Inspiration behind my new album

Notes from the desert · 4 min read

Desert landscape at dusk

Sonicnest shared that the album's creative genesis was sparked during a transformative journey through the Mojave Desert — ten days off-grid with a field recorder, a solar charger and a single synthesizer.

"The desert is the quietest loud place on earth," Sonicnest explains. "Wind over rock, coyotes at 3am, the hum of power lines for miles. I came home with forty hours of recordings and the whole shape of Opening in my head."

Those field recordings run through the entire record — pitched down into basslines, stretched into pads, chopped into percussion. The opening track is, literally, the desert at dawn.
